CITY OVERVIEW

Bellinzona is Ticino's head-turning capital. Its three hulking medieval fortresses have enthralled artists and poets for centuries, including that greatest of Romantic painters, William Turner. Yet Bellinzona keeps a surprisingly low profile considering that its hat-trick of castles form one of only 12 Unesco World Heritage sites in Switzerland. The main castle, Castelgrande, stands high upon a rocky hill, which was a Roman frontier post and Lombard defensive tower, and was later developed as a heavily fortified town controlled by Milan. Though staunchly Swiss today, it is nevertheless infused with a hefty dose of Italian dolce vita. Beyond the city's medieval mystique and knockout views of oft snow-capped mountains, you'll fall for its historic centre, woven with flower-draped alleys, Renaissance churches and cafe-rimmed piazzas, always brimming with life, laughter, chinking glasses and the out-of-tune toll of countless campaniles.

CASTLE Castelgrande Rising dramatically above the Old Town, this medieval stoghold is Bellinzona’s most visible icon. Head up Salita San Michele from Piazza Collegiata, or take the lift, buried deep in the rocky hill in an extraordinary concrete bunker-style construction, from Piazza del Sole. After wandering the grounds and the museum, stroll west along the Murata, the castle’s snaking ramparts, with photogenic views of vine-streaked mountains and castle-studded hills.
