CITY OVERVIEW

Albertville serves travellers to the Alps mainly as a junction, en route from Annecy and Chambéry to the ski fields of Chamonix-Mont Blanc and Les Trois Vallées. Not the most inspiring town, its main claim to fame is that it hosted the 1992 Winter Olympics. The story of this defining moment, still an enormous point of pride in Albertville, is colourfully retold at the Maison des Jeux Olympiques d’Hiver. East of here, there are glimpses of medieval charm in Albertville's Cité de Conflans. The town is also a potential jumping-off point to exploring Parc Naturel Régional du Massif des Bauges.

Maison des Jeux Olympiques d’Hiver In a suitably retro style, this ample museum relates the highs and lows of the 1992 Winter Olympics, hosted by Albertville. There are sparkling ice skating costumes, a bobsleigh used in the games, as well as interactive displays and screenings of white-knuckle moments in the Olympics. Most information is in French though there's subtitling and English translation in places. The museum suits Olympics enthusiasts but casual observers may be less than enthralled.
