CITY OVERVIEW

Ischgl

Ischgl becomes a quintessential powdersville in winter, with snow-sure slopes straddling the Swiss border, and a boisterous après-ski scene. The resort is a bizarre combination of rural meets raunchy; a place where table-dancing bars, folk music and techno happily coexist. Summer is decidedly more chilled and arguable more authentic, attracting hardcore hikers, mountain bikers and climbers to higher reaches. f you're into the outdoors and mountain resorts, Arosa is like a dream come true. Framed by the peaks of Weisshorn, Hörnli and moraine-streaked Schiesshorn, it is a superb Alpine all-rounder: perfect for downhill and cross-country skiers in winter, hikers and downhill bikers in summer, and families year-round with heaps of activities to amuse kids. It's also possible to ski and hike over to the neighbouring resort of Lenzerheide, over the mountains to the west.

Samnaun

Virtually right on the Austrian border, in Switzerland's remote northeast corner, is the duty-free Alpine resort of Samnaun. Through a bizarre quirk of history and law, Samnaun was excluded from the Swiss customs territory in the 19th century, since although it was part of Switzerland, the only way into this remote valley was from Austria. Even when a road was built in 1905 from Swiss territory, Samnaum kept its duty-free status, albeit a tad controversially. What that means today is that Samnaum is Switzerland's only duty-free zone and claims to be Europe's highest (in altitude!) shopping centre with over 50 stores emblazoned with 'Duty-Free' selling cosmetics, perfumes, alcohol, cigarettes and designer goods.
