CITY OVERVIEW

The history of the capital’s airports begins in 1916, the year in which Ciampino “Giovan Battista Pastine” Airport was inaugurated in Via Appia, for airships and military purposes until 1947. It was the capital’s only airport until 15 January 1961, when the “Leonardo da Vinci” international airport was inaugurated.

“Leonardo da Vinci” is the “main hub airport” for scheduled and charter international and intercontinental traffic. Rome Ciampino (CIA), also known as Giovan Battista Pastine Airport is instead, the airport for low cost traffic, “express courier” goods and General Aviation traffic (state, humanitarian and civil defence flights). Ciampino Airport Ciampino, 15km southeast of the city centre, is not a big airport, but there’s a steady flow of traffic, and at peak times it gets extremely busy.

Leonardo da Vinci Airport Rome’s main international airport, Leonardo da Vinci, also known as Fiumicino (FCO), is 30km west of the city. It currently has two operational terminals, T1 and T3, both within walking distance of each other. The easiest way to get into town is by train, but there are also buses and private shuttle services.
